Big deal. I'd be very surprised if it's not offered on DVD - it's surely cheaper and easier than USB drive. I'm sure the USB drive for MacBook Air was simply because that machine has no optical drive. Surely? :o

"Networking" in Windows CAN be hard. Because it provides a lot of flexibility and versatility. While MS does try to make "Home Networking" user friendly, I'm afraid I wouldn't say it's completely intuitive. But it's mostly because ppl don't RTFM! In this day, the internet has so many "guides" that it should not need a person with half a brain. Google is a really neat word ppl should learn. If they don't know about it by some chance...its in the dictionary! No joke!!!

Apple on the other hand, realizes this about some ppl who are "un-helpable" so their motto is to "dumb down the interface" so that ppl with 1/4 a brain can do many "computer tasks". But this doesn't really make a difference to ppl who require "powerful" networking, which includes all indirect benefits found in Windows...prolly grown since the intro of Windows NT. And that's why Windows has been the primary choice for industry. Not just your "word processing station" as well as evidently, the "server arena", but also as an interface to control machines from cash registers to robotic chained automation assembly lines that makes the actual computers!...including macs and iPhones! :p

For me, a terminal shell is an indispensable tool. In other words I find Windows frustrating.

Anyway, what exactly is this powerful networking you're talking about?
    Extra large tubes?

Oh, I just remembered an anecdote. Some years ago, we had a bit of a problem at my home. We received a complaint from our ISP that we were sending out spam. The problem is that our local network is used by around 30 apartments and the guy who received the complaint didn't really know anything about networking. He's really just a contact person. Anyway, he knocked on my door and luckily I had an old P4 with two NICs that ran some version of Linux, so I configured it as a bridge and to log packages going to port 25 (SMTP) via netfilter. Then we just put it between the router and local network. After a couple of hours I checked the logs and we found the culprit.

How would I go about that using Windows? Is it in the manual? To be honest, I'm not sure how to do it in OS X either (nor would I want to) :)

Oh please. If the NDP had got in then Canada would be royally screwed. The NDP has a poor record in a number of provinces of running the provincial governments into deep deficits and scaring away businesses.

I would take the opinion piece from someone with the Toronto Star with a little bit of salt. They are like the Huffington Post of Canada or a left leaning Canadian version of those British tabloids that they try to pass for "newspapers" in England.

So, I should not take Harper's word on his beliefs regarding social issues? Really? Do you really want to put money down that he won't act on those beliefs?

...I think that's applies here. Using a Mac is so simple, generally speaking, that the folding@home pages seem obtuse in comparison. The pages are all ugly, and instructions are unclear, and files seem to be missing that instruction pages reference.

To increase participation I recommend that a very clear communicator make a new thread (perhaops a sticky) with *dead simple* step by step instructions w/screenshorts on how to install and turn it on (circa 2010). Maybe even a screen flow that just shows exactly how to it, hosted on a service with crystal clear video like vimeo.com. Get our mirror neurons goin', yaknow?

i agree 100% with everything you just said. that said, which version, of which client, on which system, running which OS....:eek: you get the idea. it's a huge program with lots of different possible setups, and can be a real nightmare to get/keep running.

i know lots about folding, but have no idea how to help you with your current setup questions, the big units are way out of my league, and anything posted in a sticky will likely be out of date very quickly. it's dynamic and changes and updates on a regular basis. that's a good thing, but it makes keeping up with folding very difficult and time consuming.

forums like this and the official F@H forums are a really good place to start. asking questions (like you already did) is a great start, because everyone here/there want to fold and help others fold, as it's the point of the whole thing. more people folding is always better than less, therefore help all who ask. there are several here running clients on systems just like yours and will likely respond in turn. best of luck getting it sorted out.

600 Fahrenheit.... nah.... nothing gets that hot.
600 Kelvin. whats that like 40 degress celsius. Nope.... 330 Celsius. Wow thats a lot

But not as much as 600 CELSIUS

Maybe he invented a system.

600F : Melting Point of Cadmium.
    600K: Melting Point of Lead.
600C: Melting point of Aluminum (so thats why Apple switched from Titanium).

    Maybe 600 Rankine? That's only 140F, so at least a reasonable Earth-bound/non-vaporizing-your-skin temperature ...

I don't think Pages is horrible. It's not great, but it isn't quite as bad for me as everyone else finds it. I don't use it all that much (Keynote gets used far more than Pages does).

I'm with you. I'm new to the world of Mac and I want to stay clear of Word. It's not a great app, but it's something I'm getting used to.

Same with Keynote, different approach, but I like it better than the world of PP.

Wouldn't using the "extra" electricity to power fans to decrease heat lead to less "extra" electricity???? I hope they really think this through - and I'm sure they will. Of course powering fans isn't the only use for electricity.

No because this thing only can produce electricity from a heat difference. If the inside of your computer was all one temperature... guess what no power. Fans are needed to cool the air around the fans thus creating greater differences in heat. So, not only are fans necessary for this to work, but the more the better. This is probably best to merely attach to a current system and add battery life. You could not decrease the cooling. So, its nice. But its not a wonder tool. its merely a bit of extra juice in the battery. Its just like a hybrid. You wont gain any extra efficiency unless your braking hence the average highway MPG of a hybrid, even though its city is stellar. Even then its not a revolution that stopped all oil consumption. Even if everyone drove hybrids, total consumption wouldnt drop by much. Highway driving and traffic are huge factors in consumption and those aren't curbed through hybrids.

Hate to say it but the website sure makes the company and product to be a bunch of BS... they make a lot of claims with little to back them up.

They may have a real and useful product but... man they could present it in a much better way.

I couldn't agree more. There has to be a way to implement this. Though, getting the approval from APA, and MLA might be a problem. They want to sell their manuals, and this could, conceivably, cut into their sales.
EndNote and the like don't seem to have a problem. Just imagine an open XML database of references that could be transformed into different citation and bibliography styles using XSLT with a super friendly front-end that can hide the complexity of XML and XSLT for most people, but still leaves all the flexibility there for those that want it, all integrated into Word.

But back to Pages... I think this is an example of a really useful word processing feature that would absolutely ruin Pages. As soon as it tries to compete with Word, the product will be doomed. Apple needs to stay true to the conception of simple page layout app with some decent word-processing features. I still think the perfect comparison is to Microsoft Publisher on Windows. I could use something like that on the Mac.

It looks to me they ARE basically killing server...

From what I see they are migrating the server features they've built in the past into an optional module for the base OS. (like Ubuntu vs Ubuntu Server, server is just additional software.)

This dock means that the future iPhones will sync throught thunderbolt with macs and with usb 3.0 for pcs!!! I guess thins means macs wont come with usb 3.0, so maybe an adapter would come out sometime...

I repeat: sync to macs with thunderbolt and sync to pcs with usb 3.0!!

I hope they do this in the next iPhone- the thunderbolt speed.
