Let's say that the desktop and the server editions are DIFFERENT software. Ubuntu is a desktop OS with a full graphical user interface and Ubuntu Server is a full server platform WITHOUT ANY graphical user interface. Repeat: no GUI at all, leave your mouse at home, you won't be needing it. Instead, Ubuntu Server comes with options to be installed as a cloud server, a LAMP stack or for other typical server-only tasks like file and print or database or directory services.
But you are right that both Ubuntu versions use the same repositories and that with sufficient work one can eventually do what the other does or be configured to become the other edition; they are just pre-packaged for completely different uses.
While on the other hand, the OS X client before Lion could never become a full OS X server, at least not when you wanted to replicate or use Apple's proprietary server software and tools on the desktop version of the OS.
When I first read about, I still thought that they would be releasing another version of OS X server. But then I visited Apple's website and their wording didn't leave much room for interpretation: Yes, whatever server features Apple wants to save are now becoming a part of the standard package of OS X Lion. There won't be a separate server edition anymore.
And it makes sense. They buried their server business, so they don't need to develop, market, ship and support a separate server OS anymore.
This all goes along with some of the speculation in my neck of the woods. Apple may have just setup the Mac Pro server option as a temporary fix for those needing a dedicated server that wasn't a mini . . . since they murdered the Xserve.
There's no way anyone in the market for an Xserve will want to stick a Mac Pro in their racks, and a Mini just won't cut it power wise.
Putting the features that SoHo users want in a server in the desktop client will just push the desktop version further up the "what a deal" ladder and leave the Mac server business buried forever.

Oh my, what a conundrum for the fan boys. On one hand, CR loves the iPad and Apple's customer service but on the other hand, we have the iPhone 4. :D
I don't know if I qualify as a "fan boy" or not... I love technology, Apple just happens to have been the leader for a long time. Anyway, I'm not a fan of CR's criteria regardless of what they recommend. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

With the Xserve getting canned, it's likely that Apple will shift Lion server hard towards SOHO needs and further away from the needs of larger enterprise environments.

Kinda agree i could seem myself using a iPad over my MBP when i am not working, having that separation from programming is what appeals to me.
I want to work when i work and not have to think when i am just browsing the web, in reality the iPad covers all my computing needs when i am not programming.
Though it would be lovely to have Aperture on the iPad to cover my hobby needs but it would require some from of local wireless storage access as i don't think many 25MB images would fit on 64GB.

It's clear that California, Texas, and Washington all have bad deficits. Two of them have 0% income tax while one has 10.6%. What conclusion do you want me to draw from this?

You're right that this state does have one of the highest deficits and tax rates for high incomes. However, if you look at the figures, despite the tax rate, Californians still earn more per capita on average than Texans. If you're looking to save money, it doesn't necessarily make sense to move.

Texas's total tax burden is 7.9%, 1.9% lower than the national average, yet Texas's per capita GDP is $40,498, $2,041 below the national average. Nice thought by TimeWarner. However, the stations that people want to watch weren't on the first run of the app and now they have removed any remaining ones that were interesting.
This app will go nowhere. And TimeWarner certainly isn't innocent in this little battle. They love to put the stations on the bad guy side of the ledger. As a customer, I'm not drinking their koolaid.

Push effectively doesn't work for me unless i switch alerts on...badges and sounds don't work and i really cant be bothered to start restoring/resetting/reformatting my phone because of one app. I've tried deleting and re-installing the app and thats as far as i'll go.

I disagree, very very small discount
Apple should have extended the full education discount of 14% to students. As much as I love Apple's products, they're very much an overly greedy company these days. They're also possibly being myopic, as students are highly likely to buy content for the device IMO

It varies from product to product. Thirdly, you can rest assured that Apple, having learned from their "no price umbrella" tactic for the $99 3G and how successful that has been, recognizes that they have to begin offering lower prices on their products.
Dude, seriously, it's $499. That's $100 more than a crappy netbook that won't do half the stuff this thing can do.

The iPad is not a tablet PC. You can still pay $2,000 for a tablet PC if you want. The iPad is a tablet yes, but it doesn't run a full blown deskptop OS (I'm not getting into that argument).
My point is, Apple used to offer excellent discounts to students and teachers across all of it's product ranges. It's a shame they're not offering the same with the iPad.
They still offer those discounts. The only reason the percentage of the discount has dropped is because the cost of the computers has also dropped. My 20" iMac G4 cost me $2649 after the student discount back in 2004. For that today, I can get a Mac Pro.
iPod discount? Not needed. iPods are anywhere from $50 to $125 less than what they were 4 years ago. Again, no discount needed.
Really irrelevant for the schools. I can't say this will change our purchasing strategy in this area either way, the discount is too small to matter really.
Untrue when you have schools purchasing by the thousands, as many university's are considering doing for incoming freshman, just as they did with the iPod touch, White MacBook, and iPhone at places like Duke U.
Those ten packs can truly add up. And in this economy, every dollar counts.
Think about the cost schools and students will save on books when publishers begin to offer more and more text books via download versus the 20lb. text that sits on a shelf at the campus bookstore for $175. Then you try to resell at the end of the semester, and guess what? The text has been updated to it's 13th edition, and now you're stuck with it.
Apple's done a great job by pricing these at rock bottom prices already, especially when we all expected prices to be at $899 and up.
I bet my students can't wait to run products like AutoCad, Final Cut Pro, Logic, Sonar and Visual Studio, on the ipad. They'll be so excited I'm sure.
It's just a glorified web slate and note taker. By no means bad but I don't see any students where I work, or staff for that matter, rushing to get one. We may buy one or two for R&D.
I completely agree. It's probably being aimed at the computing illiterate or perhaps commuters but in its current form with an iPhone OS, it's just not powerful or versatile enough for the vast majority of students.

We have and will continue to have universal healthcare. We have and will continue to have a pension system and hopefully the conservatives can patch it up so that it will there for me when I retire as a supplement/backup for my RRSPs. The opposition parties would have either bankrupted the pension system or raised taxes on everyone which would have caused another recession. I truly hope that the conservatives will strengthen both our health care and pension systems the baby boomers are going to add significant costs to both and there's nothing any party can do about that. However I heard 'stay the course' from the political messaging from the conservatives and nothing about health care or pensions.
The conservatives are "real" fiscal conservatives unlike the republicans and social moderates. Understand this, social moderate mean that they are out to serve the needs of all Canadians and not just special interests. If there are problems with our system then the solution needs to be to fix it for everyone as that is the only fair thing to do. If you pay into the system then you should be able to access that system. I hope you are right, but tax cuts to big oil and billion dollar summits don't sound to fiscally conservative do they?

Perhaps it would be more palatable with a monthly subscription rather than coughing up $99 for a full year in advance. Heck, they could charge higher monthly fees for increased storage and I bet people would pay.
This isn't 2004. 1gb total storage for email and idisk is pitiful when Yahoo, Hotmail and Google already offer over 2gb of email space alone, for free.

And why update the laptop that is newer???
It's more likely that they switched all of their MacBook/Pro development over to Foxconn, most likely because of all the issues around the most recent line of MBPs.
